The election of the most unqualified, insane, narcissistic, disloyal, unpatriotic President in our history is the reason that I cannot support Issue 26 to change the Cleveland Hts form of government to include a "strong" elected Mayor over a hired City Manager. Donald Trump capturing the Presidency has shaken my faith in the public making decisions and I am now uncertain about the fundamentals of Democracy. After this shock to our system by electing a Moron-In-Chief, it is not a good time to bring more representative democracy to my city. Why do we need this change anyway?
The schools need improved in Cleveland Hts, but that has nothing to do with the Mayor. We have all the same issues that every other town in America is struggling with and those issues cannot be solved by a Mayor or a City Manager. We have a lack of affordable housing, face massive consumer debt from healthcare and student loans, there are 30 years of stale wages, a lack of a social safety net, and poor health care are the main issues facing our city and pretty much every city in America. What could an elected Mayor do that a City Manager can't do with regard to any of these issues?
Now, the Plain Dealer has weighed in with support for changing the Cleveland Hts government to a strong Mayor, which seals the deal for me. If the Plain Dealer supports an initiative most of the time they are wrong. I could spend days detailing all the times that the PD was wrong with their opinions and endorsements including the change in County government to John Kasich to Armond Budish to George W. Bush. Even their business strategy is off base. How can anyone think staffing a major newspaper with so few reporters will lead to anything but the same fate of Youngstown Vindicator. The Plain Dealer has the worst judgement on policies and politicians, and I know that this Cleveland Hts proposal is wrong for the City.
We all knew that Donald Trump was a corrupt, lying, tax evading, draft dodging, womanizer, poor business man who only got to where he was with the money from his father and we still elected him. If this can happen on the federal level, why can't it happen in Cleveland Hts? Our schools are not the best and so I believe that a sizable number can fall under the spell of a huckster. They do not teach how to recognize propaganda and fight against it in schools anyway. We live in a world in which a well placed tweet or insta-gram post can transform an election. The smart, intellectual leader can be taken down on the eve of an election with a rumor spread through social networks about a pedophile ring in the basement of a local pizza shop. It is harder to take down a hired effective City Manager.
I have heard that they could attract businesses or could be more accountable to the people. But in my opinion, I would trust a professional manager over a person who is popular and speaks pretty words. I mean there is no way to fire an elected Mayor. A strong City Council President can also attract businesses and could force the City Manager to be accountable to the people. A populist Mayor could lead us down the Donald Trump strong dictator road. A strong Mayor could begin a war of words with University Hts over support of the schools or the Cleveland Mayor over water rights. A strong Mayor could bankrupt the City in an attempt to build a business incubator or dramatically increase the number of Police to "keep everyone safe." They could put barriers up on Noble Road to keep out the bad elements as Shaker Hts did in the 1980s off Warrensville Center Road. They could cause South Euclid type division among the elected office holders or start calling out the Council for being a bunch of landlords and businessmen who are only enriching themselves. A "strong" Mayor could do anything to stay in power--no matter the costs, just like Donald Trump.
There are problems in Cleveland Hts, but an elected Mayor is not going to solve those problems. No thanks on the change. I am sticking with a professional in charge over a politician. I will vote "No, on Issue 26."

Mr and Ms America, we really need to talk about your son...

It is time for that school district meeting to take place between our civic leadership and the supporters of the little trouble-maker, Donnie Trump. It is more of an intervention before a crisis. I am talking about the need for radical change similar to when a mandatory reporter recognizes a possible school shooter. I am suggesting a change in the American Democracy; a revision in the Constitution, so a seriously mentally ill person can never take control of our government again. After the racist tweets against elected officials, tearing up international agreements, beginning a trade war with China, and the encouragement of racists chants at a political rally, we have reached that point in our history when we need that meeting with the school superintendent for the white Midwesterners who are angry at the world. We have reached the breaking point and we have to have a heart-to-heart with the MAGA crowd. Someone has to set the record straight on the benefits of immigration and how seeking asylum in the United States is legal. We need an intervention with white people to show them the nefarious ways their spoiled little rich kid got elected. We must demonstrate how with the help of a hostile foreign power, this super-charged used car salesman used every straw man to pray on people's fears, We need to show how he broke long standing alliances, and the fact that no one wants to work with this guy or how corporate interests are running the government. We the people must show the Trump's Twitter followers the harm he is doing to our farmers, our health care industry, our financial stability and our preparedness for natural disasters. We must show them the lies, the corruption and how he is only looking out for himself and his rich friends. We have to figure out how to nicely convey to the Reagan Democrats how so many norms in this country have fallen and the long term damage this guy is doing to our climate, our politics, and our leadership role on this planet.

I know that we brought this on ourselves. We got complacent in the routine of the two parties at odds with each other. We thought that it was someone else's job to provide checks and balances. It became a sport to put the blame both sides for our failures, and we did not spend enough time protecting our democracy. We allowed corporate lobbyists and powerful people to take over our elected office holders by purchasing them with donations. We vilified government and did not call out those who did not pay their fair share of taxes. We have allowed our legislative bodies to get paid to do nothing except to run for re-election. I know that Republicans have failed to do their patriotic duty to stand up to this tyrant, but we are all to blame for allowing that party to fall into the abyss. Fear has guided us for years. We are always looking for the boogeyman who is keeping our wages stagnant, shackling us with student loan debt, de-stabilizing our health care safety net, and it turns out we need only look in a mirror. We have not voted in significant numbers. (I know this is because our leaders have given us no reason to vote, but it is still our problem that we have not solved). We have allowed corruption and inaction to become the norm. We are easily distracted by crime while our government slowly incarcerates a larger number of our citizens. All the real problems around us are ignored in favor of football and entertainment. If we knew as much about who funds our elected officials as we know about Tom Brady's warmup routine or the Kardashian's love interests, we could actually live up to our reputation as a free country. Instead, we are beholden to those with money who control our society.
Time is up. I was in Puerto Rico during and after Hurricane Maria and was shocked how docile and accepting the Americans who happen to live on this island were to being knocked back to the 19th century. I could not believe there were not street protests after a week of no electricity or regular food donations on the streets of San Juan. The financial system was halted by the hurricane, but they were peacefully waiting to pay for gas, food, and to attempt to get money out of the bank. There is no way a person living in Cleveland, Detroit or Santa Fe would have accepted the lack of running water 10 days after a Hurricane or an airport that was paralyzed with only one flight leaving a day. American citizens would have blamed their own government and would have ousted the Mayor or elected official across the US if they had experienced what happened in Puerto Rico. It took two years, but justice finally came to Puerto Rico. It is strange that Ricardo Rossello' was kicked out over his abhorrent texts and not the deaths, destruction and chaos he presided over after Maria, but the outcome is what matters. If the people of Puerto Rico can rise up and throw out their horrible leader so can the mainland Americans. Let us take a lesson from our fellow Americans and rally against this New York Con Man.

Top 15 Worst Cabinet Members in the Trump Administration
There is no one who would suspect that the guy who lost on Dancing with the Stars and also forgot the three cabinet departments (including the one he leads) that he wanted to end while running for President or the woman in charge of the World Wrestling Entertainment would NOT be in the top 15 for worst cabinet members when this all began on January 21, 2017. It also is clear that every single one of these 15 would be on the top of the list of worst cabinet members in every other modern Presidential term. Most of the Trump cabinet members would have lasted about a month even in the corrupt Nixon Administration or the scandal ridden Reagan Administration. In fact, everyone of the 15 would have quickly been fired in both Republican and Democratic administrations of the past 50 years. The reality is that none of these 15 would have been confirmed in any previous administration and most only cleared the Senate by the skin of their teeth.
We have not seen this level of corruption since the Buchanan Administration, who actually had a number of his cabinet members turn against the United States before the Civil War. As far as we know, only one of the Trump cabinet members has turned against the United States. This is my opinion of the worst 15 cabinet members over the two and a half years of the Trump Administration. To see the volume of the scandals, suspect behavior and blatant criminal activity among this rogue's gallery of far right ideologues will never be matched. You have to wonder if a lot of this could be avoided had we not allowed the simple majority votes to approve judicial and cabinet members in the US Senate or had eliminated the Electoral College in 2001? I base this list on the harm to United States and the government that they are entrusted to lead.
There are cabinet members who were bad, but they have not harmed the public to the extent of the 15 yet. For example, Elaine Chao made the unusual step of defending Boeing and flying on a 737 Max to reiterate its safety just one day before the grounding of all their planes and after nearly every other country had grounded the 737 Max planes. This spotlighted the cozy relationship between Boeing and federal investigators and caused concern for airline safety. Matthew Whitaker was acting Attorney General for a mere 3 months but he could have made the list for his outrageous testimony before Congress. His background was sketchy, and we do not know all the damage this Attorney General did while in office. Rex Tillerson seemed out of his elements, but did not make the list. Here are my Top 15 worst cabinet members in the current administration.
15. John Kelly for his role as Chief of Staff. He kept his head down at Homeland Security and tried
to deal with the Muslim Ban as well as the regular attacks on immigrants by his boss. He went into the Chief of Staff job with his eyes wide open for the craziness of the Commander-in-Chief, and was almost immediately sidelined. Outside observers felt he would bring military discipline to the Oval Office, but that was quickly proven to be a fantasy. The chaos only accelerated under John Kelly. The contradictory statements escalated and the administration drifted from one crisis to another. The White House acted from a position of chaos and felt more like working in the US Embassy in Saigon in late April 1975 than the center of US government in the bubble of Washington DC. He was the chief of staff for this administration while Puerto Rico was suffering and 3,000 people were dying after Hurricane Maria. He attacked a sitting Congresswoman with lies and exaggerations. Kelly was indifferent to his boss not comforting the wife of a fallen military hero or the racist comments his boss made after Charlottesville hatefest. He did not seem to understand the job or be able to understand how his actions impacted others. He was a fish dressed in a suit put in charge of an aviary for Birds of Prey--they ate him alive, suit and all.
14. Mick Mulvaney makes the list, but I can't decide if it is because of his awful performance as the
head of the Office of Management and Budget or is it his horrible job as acting Chief of Staff. In every other administration, the head of OMB is a full time job, but Mulvaney has held this job while acting as head of the Consumer Protection Bureau and then Chief of Staff. As the head of OMB, he has allowed the deficit to explode while continuing to champion trickle down economics. As OMB Director, the President's budget in 2018 did not ask for the billions for a Southern border wall, but then the administration shut down the government because Congress did not give over billions for the wall. Mulvaney was chief of staff at the midway point of the government shutdown and spouted outrageous claims in public. He has not brought discipline to the White House or set one communication strategy. He continues the "let-Trump-be-Trump" laissez-faire strategy to the role of Chief of Staff. Mulvaney also has ethics investigations for burying government research that counter administration positions and not being a good steward of public money. His tax cut for the rich has also exploded the deficit that young Congressman Mick Mulvaney would be yelling and screaming on every Sunday show about the horrible legacy to be paid by his children.
13. Alex Acosta was a low key appointment to the Department of Labor after the previous nominee
had to withdraw for allegations of domestic violence and misogyny. Acosta makes the list because of his handling of the prosecution of Jeffery Epstein while serving as the US Attorney in Miami. He negotiated a sweetheart deal with a man accused of having sex with a minor in 2007 that was declared illegal and criticized by a judge in 2019. Epstein hung out and partied with the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. and many are speculating that this is how Acosta came to the attention of Trump. The problem is that as Secretary of Labor part of his responsibility is to combat human trafficking which is difficult if he had struck a deal with a notorious case with a wealthy friend of the President. He has also done nothing to help the labor force in America. He is silent on the closing of GM plants in America and he is silent on the negative impact of tariffs on working people here at home.
12. Andrew Wheeler at the Environmental Protection Administration may be the one member of the
cabinet who makes the list for doing his job well. He is a long term lobbyist for America's polluters and Wheeler is now the head of the group that is supposed to enforce clean air and clean water laws. I contend that Wheeler was installed to strip away at regulations of big business to allow them to pollute without federal oversight. He is very good at his job. He was the Deputy EPA Chief working behind the scenes until he was propelled to the top job after the previous director left under a cloud. Wheeler is trying to make coal cool again. He wants to push oil drilling anywhere and everywhere. He is working to get pipelines approved and to strip away regulations over power companies. Wheeler is basically working on strip mining 40 years of regulations, and he has an open door to the largest polluters to make suggestions. He has also ignored problems such as the Flint water crisis, climate change, and the contamination at military bases in the US. This would be a scandal in a normal administration, but this is just how the swamp works in the Trump administration.
11. Tom Price. When you look back now, all his ethical impasses were so quaint back when the
Trump Administration was in its infancy. The scandal that was his downfall was racking up $1 million in luxury private plane trips around the country and paying back $52,000. He would fly in to visit his son for lunch in Nashville, and many of his trips were for personal business. In this administration, he was viewed as a failure for not repealing Obamacare, and could not reform Medicaid. Price got his high position in the "Bad Cabinet" list because he was the first of the current administration to make it through Congressional vetting and then resign. These were probably great things for Americans, but they were failures in the eyes of the President. He also had ethical issues with owning stock in the healthcare industry while sitting on powerful committees in Congress that oversee healthcare and on through the transition phase into the Executive branch. Price was excessively political in how he oversaw this huge department of Health and Human Services. He did nothing for immigrants in detention and also had no response to the opioid crisis killing US citizens. It did seem suspect that he resigned over his travel issues when there were at least three other members of the cabinet with the exact same problem. Could it be that lavish travel was not the real reason he left? We will never know since the oversight of the Executive Administration had totally broken down.
10. Ben Carson, the man who will play Sleepy in the live version of Snow White after his term, cracks the top 10 cabinet member. Can you believe this guy was a neurosurgeon? He has had his share of high profile scandals that he weathered like the outrageous price of his office furniture and the involvement of his relatives in HUD business, but behind the scenes he has really undermined the mission of the Department of Housing by employing unqualified staff and defending the horrendous cuts to the housing budget. He was ill-prepared for a Congressional hearing to explain the HUD budget, and he has caused homelessness with some of his policies. Carson could not explain to Congress why he had removed any mention of providing rights to Lesbian and Gay individuals within America's homeless shelters. He has stripped away fair housing protections by dialing back investigations. When his furniture scandal erupted, he was overshadowed by all the other scandals in the administration. Carson has told staff that they have to get approval from upper administration before they can have any contact with those outside groups. While he is strict with his staff, he has allowed his family free reign within the department. Carson's wife was involved in the decorating problems and his son received a contract to help HUD with a "listening project." There was also concern that his oversight staff was going over to the Department of Interior to clear the Secretary of wrongdoing. The place is a mess, and they are failing at their core mission of helping people with housing.
9.Ryan Zinke is one strange guy formerly of the Department of Interior, and he piled up the scandals
while also working to undermine the mission of the protecting the nation's public lands and the resources. He came in riding a horse in Washington DC with a flag signifying his presence in the building and ended his term blaming "false allegations." He did more to change the course of the agency to the opposite of its founding purpose in two years then any of the other cabinet members. Zinke tried to shrink national monuments which has never been tried before. He allowed the use of lead bullets for hunting, he sought to eliminate the rules preventing the import of trophy carcasses that resulted from big game hunts. Zinke tried to eliminate protections on certain endangered species, eliminate off shore drilling regulations in Florida, and re-interpret the Migratory Bird Act. He dramatically cut the Interior budget especially with regard to enforcement activities. Zinke was also waist deep in scandals including his personal investments in local Montana businesses, his meeting with lobbyists and oil executives and not having those meetings documented in his calendar, and his requests for the government to pay for charter flights to private functions. Luckily, he regularly wore rubber waders with all the dangerous waters he waded into including insulting members of Congress and attempting to shut down the health impacts of mountaintop mining operations. He laid off thousands of employees and transferred others to jobs that they have no expertise in as a form of punishment. He blamed the California wildfires on "eco-terrorists" without any evidence, and regularly violated the Hatch Act by campaigning while doing public business.
8. Jefferson Beauregard Sessions comes in at number 8 for the worst cabinet member. If there was
any more prescient parents in the history of the Republic it has to be Jeff Sessions' parents. I mean, who else would name their kid after not one but two Confederate leaders in hopes that he would grow up to be one of the most racist Senators, Attorneys General, or US Attorney in American history. He recused himself from the investigation over Russian involvement in US elections thus permanently pissing off his boss, and lied to Congress about meetings with Russians. He was like a man without any friends in Washington. Sessions was a radioactive Attorney General. He still worked to put his stamp on injustice in America by going strong after the Marijuana industry. Session attempted to put toothpaste back in the tube by re-interpreting enforcement of discrimination based on gender identity to not include trans individuals. He defended the Muslim travel ban and attacked a Hawaiian judge while at the same time, attacking the State of Hawaii. He went after immigrants and was the architect of the family detention policy including the caging of children. Sessions defended in court every crazy and outrageous proposal of the Administration and yet his owner kept beating him. Kept coming back for more punishment with that weird smile on his face. Only thing positive one could say about this guy was he was a true believer so he did not get caught up in all the graft or enriching himself like the other cabinet members.
7. Steven Mnuchin. There is something poetic that the guy who funded a movie about a post-apocalyptic hell-scape without any government called Mad Max Fury Road would be the Treasury Secretary of an administration that hates government. He is also a weird man with a wannabe actress wife who both crave the spotlight. Mnuchin was one of the authors of the tax cut for the rich in 2017 that has since blown a hole in the US deficit. That horrendous monstrosity of a change in law that provides tax breaks to the rich by forcing our children to pay for the fiscal irresponsibility of this administration alone rockets the authors to the top of bad cabinet list. Mnuchin also had suspect travel arrangements on private planes that he later had to reimburse the government for. He has dubious ethical standards by turning his production company over to his wife, which did not settle any of his many conflict of interest problems. He helped to hide the Trump tax returns and took the unusual step of cancelling sanctions on a Russian oligarch. All of this plus his general disdain for the media and our elected Representatives put him at #7 of the bad cabinet members.
6. William Barr: The case against William Barr is lengthy and as of this writing he has only been
Attorney General for a few months. He became the propaganda arm for the White House in his dealings with the Mueller Report, but he cannot be seen as one of the worst cabinet members. Some would characterize him as one of the best cabinet members for defending the person who appointed him to the office he occupies. I look at the Attorney General from the perspective of a mafia family administration. William Barr is like Consigliere Tom Hagen from the Godfather movies. Barr's current job is to be one of the most competent members of the family providing legal advice and recommendations for expansion of this criminal enterprise. By the way in this example, Jared Kushner is Fredo, Ivanka is Michael Corleone, and Steven Miller is Sonny. Anyway, Barr has not had time to do bring scandal to the office yet, but he has piled on unethical behavior such as lying to the American public about the Mueller report. He will not talk to the House side of Congress and was held in contempt. He has kept information vital to the investigation of the President out of sight, but has not claimed executive privilege for some reason. I am sure that Barr will finish strong with a higher place on the list.
5. Betsy DeVos. Now we are entering the top 5 in horrible cabinet members. For this spot we have to
give it to the woman who is single handily trying to privatize the US Educational system. Like Zinke, she is another of the true-believers who wants to use her government position to completely subvert her own agency. She has worked to repeal many of the Obama administration rules and procedures. DeVos has refused to consider discrimination of trans individuals as a Civil Rights issue. She struck the tough rules laid down over the previous administration on sexual harassment on college campuses. She has reinstated an accrediting firm that was dismissed by the Obama Education department. DeVos has not allowed people swindled by bankrupt for-profit higher education centers have their loans automatically cancelled. In fact, DeVos has gone out of her way to protect for-profit colleges even those shady groups accused of fraud. She has adopted the Trump stance on dealing with Congress through scorn and disdain. DeVos is the sister to a truly evil Bond character Eric Prince, and some of that heart of darkness had to run in the family. She has also ignored or run out the clock on many education issues facing the United States. She has no suggestions for the huge increase in student loan debt facing the youth of America or children dying in school shootings. DeVos avoided telling Congress any suggestion about the scandals over celebrity college admissions. No list on the DeVos tenure would be complete without mentioning the boneheaded things that she has said as the head of the cabinet office in charge of educating America's youth. From her claims in her confirmation about schools needing guns to defend against Grizzly Bears or claiming that historically black colleges being good examples of choice despite the reality that African Americans typically did not have a choice of schools before 1940 were all part of an amazing number gaffes by the Secretary.
4. Wilbur Ross seems like he is too old to be involved in a scandal. He sleeps through meetings and
acts like a cantankerous old guy yelling about the neighbors whenever he is on TV or appearing before Congress. Department of Commerce is such a critical position with the US Census coming up and so his reach is vast. I believe this guy is dishonest to his core and has had decades to perfect his lying behavior. He lied about putting a question concerning US citizenship on the US Census falsely claiming it was at the request of the Justice Department. He was a lifelong free trader until he joined the nationalist's administration. He lied about divesting from many companies which could present a conflict of interest with his current job. He even shorted a company days before it was revealed that he was invested with the Russian backed company knowing that the scandal would probably reduce the stock price. So, he profited off his own scandals. He was accused of siphoning off money from his business partners and workers to the tune of millions of dollars. He is one of those deplorable guys we have heard so much about.
3. Kirstjen Nielsen has the outward appearance of being a strong compassionate leader, but it
became apparent she was a cold shell of a human after incarcerating and jailing children away from their parents. Yes, Nielsen constructed American concentration camps for refugees and immigrants to the United States. She ripped children out of their parents arms and then put them in cages. She lied repeatedly to Congress and attempted to use verbal gymnastics to cloud the minds of the American public with the merits of building a wall. No one in their right mind could justify a physical structure along our southern border as a sound policy, but Nielsen did. She had a role in bad responses to hurricanes in the United States including the aftermath of Maria in PR. There is no way to understate her crimes against humanity with the family separation policy. She went along with the racist policies within the White House to portray refugees seeking asylum as criminals. Nielsen accused the media of mischaracterizing the family separation policy. She lied to the American public by insisting that the President could not sign an executive order ending family separation only hours before he did in fact sign that order. Migrant children died in custody during her watch, and yet was regularly berated and betrayed by her bosses in the White House. So she made a deal with the Devil to provide cover for an evil policy, but was still criticized by Lucifer for not doing her job very well.
2. Scott Pruitt moves into the number 2 position only because of the volume of scandal surrounding
this corrupt individual. His crimes were not as evil as Nielsen in the immediate, but have a long shelf life. His ability to put corporate profits above global climate change will only be felt by our children. He chased windmills for a year to bring back coal jobs, and he worked to enrich himself and his family while doing the people's business. By the end of his term, he was facing 14 separate federal investigations one more bizarre than the next. He was a headache for ethics officers and inspector generals throughout the government. He was nominated to serve as head of the Environmental Protection Agency as the choice of big polluters in America. He voiced skepticism about the impact humans are having on climate change and was hated by current and former EPA staff. He was king of the Swam Monsters in a cabinet straight out of the Black Lagoon. Pruitt attempted to diminish the role of the agency and reverse any progress made in regulating polluters over the previous 16 years. He was not shy about his shilling for corporations over the interests of the public.
The first budget under Pruitt's term as EPA chief was a cut by 24%, and he attempted to eliminate previous lawsuits through settlements. He bullied staff and regularly met with energy industry while rarely talking to environmentalists. Under his leadership, the EPA saw a precipitous fall in collections of penalties for violation of environmental law. Pruitt was paying a ridiculously low price for two rooms in the house of an energy lobbyist. He used flashing lights to stop traffic so that he could go to fancy restaurants. Pruitt had an excessive travel budget including private jets, military flights and first class accommodations. His excuse for this expensive travel was that lashing out from passengers on coach flights could "endanger his life." He kept up this excessive travel after other cabinet member resigned for the same reason. He made a new art out of wasteful spending including $70,000 for two desks and $43,000 for a sound proof phone booth. Pruitt tried to get his wife a Chick-fil-A franchise, and made staff use their own credit cards to pay for his expenses. He had his security detail track down lotion at the Ritz and following his family around at Disneyland. He reassigned or demoted staff who were not following the party line on climate change, coal or those who questioned his leadership. While promoting some, he promoted others or gave them amazing bonuses from other government resources. Pruitt also attempted to promote himself for other more high profile jobs in the administration.
1. The worst cabinet member in the first two and half years of the administration is Michael Flynn
who only actually served for 24 days in the administration. Flynn gets the title of worst cabinet member because he sold out his own country for...well, I am actually not sure why he sold out his country. He did work for both Russia and Turkey leaving himself open for blackmail. He was attempting to reduce the sanctions against Russia. He had regular contact with Russians between the election and the inauguration, and then lied about those contacts. He delayed a Kurdish invasion of Syria to appease Turkey. Flynn was under investigation for planning a kidnapping and rendition of the cleric Fehullah Gulen back to Turkey for his alleged involvement in a coup. After the lies and working to undermine US interests, the President asked the FBI director to let Flynn go about his life with no further sanction, because "he was a nice guy."
Eventually, Flynn pled guilty to lying to the FBI, but it is not clear why he sold out his country and assisted two foreign powers over the United States. Was it money? Was it an attempt to get back at President Obama who had fired him? Was it pure stupidity? Other issues that put Flynn on the top of the list of bad cabinet members include the repeated chants to lock up a political opponent like he was moving into governing a banana republic. He said that Americans can have a legitimate fear of Muslims and that Islam is a political ideology and a cancer. Flynn was a big supporter of the Muslim ban, and met with far right leaders from Austria during the transition. Overall, he was horrible. He had the shortest tenure and he acted in concert with an enemy of the United States against our interests.
That is my opinion and I understand that with each day scandals continue to mount in this Legion of Doom Cabinet.
by Brian Davis.
We have not seen this level of corruption since the Buchanan Administration, who actually had a number of his cabinet members turn against the United States before the Civil War.

Why Am I So Angry with We The People?
I worked on getting people registered and then helped them to get to the polling places to vote in 2016. In the past, 90 percent of the people who I registered were enthusiastic Democrats intending to vote for Obama, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, or Al Gore. In 2016, I saw about 40% of the homeless and low income people I was registering were pro-Trump voters. I should have been better prepared for the outcome with so many destitute people looking for a savior in a con man. My world changed that November and I no longer trust America to do what is right in the end. I do not trust the United States will allow justice to prevail or has the capacity to vote in their own interests. I see now how bad Mayors like Mike White in Cleveland or Willie Brown in San Francisco are elected for all the wrong reasons. I see how democracies go off the rails and end up with an Adolf Hitler, Paul Kagame, Recep Erdogan, or Hugo Chavez as authoritarian elected leaders. Even after living through the Nixon and Bush lies and propaganda I still had faith that in the end we would end up with a Kennedy or Obama.
Things have changed so dramatically in two years I am not sure we ever get back to a struggle for social justice. Could another FDR ever pass a New Deal for America? Do we ever hope of seeing an Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution or Universal Health Care? Do we ever see a year without a school shooting or the day when we end Veteran's homelessness? How will we confront the injustice of incarcerating a higher percentage of the population than nearly every other country on earth? I have my doubts. Every norm is busted and two branches of government have taken control while Congress shrinks into wallpaper. The new American Gangster is in charge of the Executive Branch of government including the US military and he is appointing extremist judges.
My shock in November 2016 was because in 200 years of American history this has never happened before. There were so many things that have tripped up previous candidates for the highest office and should have tripped up this candidate, but for some reason the American public gave him a pass. Any one of these errors, gaffes, insults, or scandals should have caused a candidate to withdraw from consideration, but this man just kept going. I don't know if maybe he has no shame or self awareness, but he should have bowed out quietly to save his family humiliation or in the words of every scandal plagued political candidate, "to spend more time with his family." Eagleton cried and left the race while Gary Hart got caught doing Monkey Business and slinked away. Howard Dean had a weird scream and George Romney was "brainwashed" into supporting the War in Vietnam. There are so many candidates who had one thing trip up their candidacy, but Donald Trump was immune to all of them. Here is my list of the issues which should have disqualified this man from any elected office and should have made it impossible for any American to cast a vote for this small time mobster.
I could only conclude that the United States went crazy, and I acted accordingly. Everything changed in January 2017, and so did I. I quit my job helping people after realizing that the number of deaths and destruction of families was only going to get worse. I changed who I hung out with and who I communicated with. The world looks much different than it did in 2015. I had hope that the United States would finally get around to addressing inequality and injustice. Now, I only hope that my children will see the beginnings of a civil rights struggle take root and that they will repair some of the institutions destroyed by electing an evil man to lead the United States.

PS: While I was thinking about this it came to me that even his slogan is a reason to vote against this person as he sought the Presidency. "Make America Great Again" means that you are saying America is bad and needs to be transformed into something out of the past. When has a candidate for federal office ever said, "America sucks and needs to go back to the Golden days?" It is a crazy slogan that should have cast the author into the dustbin of history through deportation to some other country. Did anyone think about what MAGA really means? What happened to the concept that "God blessed America or we live in the greatest country on earth?"

There are so many candidates who had one thing trip up their candidacy, but Donald Trump was immune to all of them. Here is my list of the issues which should have disqualified this man from any elected office and should have made it impossible for any American to cast a vote for this small time mobster.
- The Access Hollywood Tape that made women out to be objects for exploitation is disqualifying for any employment. This was an audio tape of a man confessing to sexually assaulting women. How could someone vote for a guy who admits on tape that he has no respect for women?
- His opening speech about Mexico and the racist stereotypes about our neighbors was disgusting and deplorable.
- The dozen women who said Trump was a serial sexual harasser make this man eligible for host of the Friar's Club in 1950 but not a job in the federal government. One harassment charge is enough to stop a candidate, but this man had more than a dozen and then he said he would prosecute these women after the election.
- Purchasing newspaper advertisements proclaiming that a group of underage kids should be murdered for a rape in Central Park that turned out to be wrong shows horrible judgement. Long after the wrongful conviction and years of improper incarceration, Trump still professed their guilt without any evidence except my theory is he saw the color of their skin and was convinced they were guilty.
- His four bankruptcies in business proved that he was a bad businessman.
- I would single out bankrupting a casino as a special case for disqualification to be a President since the house always wins in a casino.
- Praising an espionage organization like Wikileaks is a betrayal of the United States.
- Attacking the First Amendment by making the media an enemy of the state is contrary to the founding principles of the United States.
- Attacking Megyn Kelly in a disgusting and derogatory manner for the sole reason that she asked tough questions makes you out to have the maturity of a child and ineligible for elected office.
- Skipping a primary debate and claiming to instead raise money for veterans which was a lie.
- Avoiding the draft to Viet Nam with a fake doctor's excuse makes you ineligible to lead the US military which is essential for the Office of President.
- Making fun of a disabled reporter on stage to a cheering crowd is unforgivable.
- Not releasing your tax returns, and then lying about the reason for the secrecy makes the candidate ineligible for city council let alone federal office.
- Vile descriptions of fellow Republicans who were also running for the Presidency including that Ted Cruz's father was involved in the Assassination of John Kennedy make the candidate unworthy to be on the ballot.
- The horrible performances at the Presidential debates with infantile responses and short sighted answers should disqualify a typical candidate.
- No candidate should represent one party after living most of his life as a member of the other party. The electorate should have realized this was a con when the candidate had spent 25 years supporting abortion rights then to suddenly proclaims the exact opposite position to run for elected office.
- A candidate who does not regularly vote is not qualified to govern.
- An attack on a Gold Star family is disqualifying for a position in charge of the military.
- His birtherism of Barack Obama despite all the evidence to the contrary was insane. Those with an untreated serious mental illness are unpredictable, paranoid, unstable, fits of delusion or hysteria. None of these characteristics are good qualities for the Office of President.
- Criticizing an American hero for getting captured and tortured was repugnant and more evidence of deep psychological damage.
- His cheating on his wives including rumors that he had cheated with porn stars would normally end a campaign cold in its tracks.
- Regularly claiming to put his political opponent in jail and encouraging crowds to chant "Lock Her Up" is over the line and encourages lawlessness. This makes us look like a Banana Republic to the rest of the world.
- Allowing hateful rhetoric about fellow Americans (see General Flynn, Rudy Guiliani) at your convention is disqualifying.
- Spreading untruths about Syria and other refugees with that hate-filled poem "The Snake" shows a hate filled personality.
- Your campaign manager roughs up a female reporter and is charged with battery is a show stopper in a normal world.
- Surrounding yourself with some of the lowest most contemptuous people in politics including the known slimy Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn, Jeff Sessions, and Jared Kushner is a sign of desperation and should have been a clue that the candidate would hire deplorable people to govern.
- His behavior in the immediate aftermath of a terrorist attack on the United States showed his inability to react to a crisis. Claiming without any evidence that American Muslims cheered at 9/11, and while on the subject claiming that his building was now the tallest in Manhattan after the towers fell on September 11.
- Identifying the followers of the second most popular religion on the planet to be banned from entering the United States.
- Faking religious beliefs as evidenced by never attending a religious service and not being able to identify the proper way to say 2 Corinthians were all evidence that his one true religion was money.
- Attacking the judiciary by claiming a judge to be biased because of his family's Hispanic origins is racist and stupid.
- Using the campaign to promote his own businesses was never contemplated and does not have a way to prevent this from happening again.
- His treatment of Rosie O'Donnell in the most vitriolic, hate-filled and horrific language seems emblematic of a larger misogynistic behavior of the candidate. He destroys his enemies while not realizing that in politics the victor has to govern with the supporters of the loser.
- Speaking to a known propagandist who is also a champion of conspiracy theories and white supremacy, Alex Jones of InfoWars was granted access to the candidate. This fact alone that Trump felt it important to reach out to the InfoWars audience is disqualifying.
I could only conclude that the United States went crazy, and I acted accordingly. Everything changed in January 2017, and so did I. I quit my job helping people after realizing that the number of deaths and destruction of families was only going to get worse. I changed who I hung out with and who I communicated with. When Sanity is Restored to America...
Our government is crumbling around us at both the state and national level. In some areas, like Cuyahoga County, even the local government is scandal ridden. All branches of the national government are failing the people with an Executive branch that no one wants to serve and a Legislative branch that is paralyzed by division. The judicial branch of government is partisan to the point that it has lost the trust of the American people. Lady Justice's blindfold is off. Her sword is dull from the partisan war she has fought and her scales are tangled and tattered. We are not doing a good job in keeping the Republic going as Benjamin Franklin warned.
The State government is gerrymandered itself into irrelevance. Thank you federal courts for showing the extremes Republicans have gone to keep control, but my guess is that the Supreme Court will reverse all these partisan gerrymandering cases to return things to normal. They ran with a total disdain for the very office they sought. They were elected with the promise that they would cut taxes no matter the circumstances. They sacrificed the health and well being of their citizens for a nice powerful job that dwindles in power every year. This is the reason that so many smart well educated flee the state. This is why good jobs are not locating in Ohio and it is the reason people seek an escape from their problems in opioids at a higher rate compared to other states. Who wants to live in a state that does not value government, civil society, immigration, public resources or education?
It is a dark time, but we have experienced dark times in the past. We have survived an evil alliance built on hate and and the attempt to consolidate Europe under one maniac as king. We have survived a civil war as well as cold wars between nuclear armed nations. We have lived through a time when a few big business men ran the country and the time when a significant population was enslaved. The US has survived the disenfranchisement of women and hundreds of years of discriminating against nearly every minority population living within its borders. We can make it through these rough waters as we have overcome challenges of the past, but we need to keep our eyes on the prize.
There are so many norms that were lost over the last three years from the trust in our elections to painting the news media as an enemy of the state, but a strong wind of justice is coming. There are seven areas which we need to focus after the crisis. To make it simple for the short attention span Twitter crowd here are my suggestions for focus after the hurricane has passed.
1. Restoring representative democracy including voting and oversight.
2. A massive building spree to dramatically expand affordable housing.
3. Income support to expand living wage jobs and livable incomes to those who cannot work.
4. Improving quality free public education through an associates degree for every American.
5. Protection of our natural resources from the effects of climate change.
6. Universal free quality healthcare to everyone living within the United States to include a focus on behavioral health.
7. Reducing incarceration by reforming the criminal justice system.
This is a broad list that needs some details. I know that many will quibble with the non-inclusion of critical social justice issues such as immigration, the gun culture, reproductive rights, and discrimination of the LGBTQ community. Some of these issues fit within the list of seven and others just confuse the public. These issues overlooked have been used by the far right religious zealots to divide and conquer the United States. They use these issues to spread fear and misinformation. Take these issues off the table and it is difficult to rally people against a justice issue. I am not dismissing these issues, but the water is so cloudy that we need a period of filtration to prove that government can solve problems.

Still No Democrats Running to be President of the United States
The Democrats now can field two baseball teams including designated hitters with those who have thrown their hats into the ring as candidates for President. These are a motley bunch who are amazingly diverse, which is an accomplishment. I have yet to see any of these candidates stake out a position to represent all of the United States of America. It is strange to see these candidates stake out one or two firm positions, but have decided to not reach across to rural America, military families, gun owners, stupid people, or the fundamentalists. No one seems to want to represent all 320 million Americas. At this point, here is what it looks like to me as an outsider looking in. I present the candidates and the office that they seem to be running for at this time in alphabetical order.
1. Michael Bennett--President of Those Who Hate Everyone But will Vote for Someone with a Good Sounding Name or President of Those Who Vote by Alphabetical Order
2. Joe Biden--President of PA, MI, and WI.
3. Cory Booker--President of Superhero Mayors
4. Pete Buttigieg--President of Those Who Are Different in America. (Gay Christian? I mean what are there 8 of those in the United States?)
5. Julian Castro--President of Latinos Living in Cities
6. John Delaney--President of Those Who Will Only Vote for The First Candidate Declared and Those Fans of First Come, First Served.
7. Tulsi Gabbard--President of Samoa
8. Kirsten Gillibrand--President of the Sexually Harassed.
9. Kamala Harris--President of Law Enforcement Democrats (all 200,000 of them?)
10. John Hickenlooper--President of Marijuana Users and Home Brewing Geologists.
11. Jay Inslee: President of Those Concerned About Climate Change (Basically Seattle and Portland).
12. Amy Klobuchar--President of Canada and Minnesota.
13. Wayne Messam--President of Florida College Football Fans
14. Seth Moulton--President of Marines Who Attended Harvard
15. Beto O'Rourke--President of Artists and Creative Americans Who Work a Day Job as a Barista.
16. Tim Ryan--President of Youngstown or President of the US House of Representatives.
17. Bernie Sanders--President of the Democratic Socialists of America and Those Serving Time in Prison.
18. Eric Swalwell--President of MSNBC.
19. Elizabeth Warren--President of Smart People and Those In College.
20. Marianne Williamson--President of Soulful Social Activists.
21. Andrew Yang--President of Startup Executives.
Updated: 22. Steve Bullock--Attorney General in the Next Democratic Administration
Updated 23. Bill De Blasio--President of Those Who Attend Demonstrations
I am sure there will be more, but it is a depressing list at this point.

Solution to Homelessness 1: Federal Government
It has been 832 days since the world changed so dramatically, and I lost all hope in the citizens of the United States to act in their own interests. Democracy took a big hit in November 2016, and it lead me to question our status as the best democracy on the planet. We the people, selected a grifter, a narcissist, a racist, and a misogynist who I knew would undermine U.S. institutions and the foundations of our society. I knew that American exceptionalism and the struggle for social justice were over for my life. I felt as though all the things I believed in like equality, fairness, ending hunger would be lost while I was walking this earth. I bought into the concept that the meek shall inherit the earth or that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness could actually be filled in the United States. I knew that poverty and housing policy would be forgotten in Republican controlled government, and so I walked away. I left my passion and my career of 20 years in November 2016 because I saw the dream turn into a cheap cable reality show. People wanted a quick fix and the hope for a "piece of the action" if we put a "self-made billionaire" disrupt-er into the White House. The majesty of Barack and Michelle Obama had turned into a used car salesmen in control of the US military. It was like watching a double bill of George Carlin followed by Andrew Dice Clayton--jarring and impossible to imagine.
I have a lot of ideas and still think about homelessness everyday. I feel horrible that things have not gotten any better and people are still dying on the streets of Cleveland. The shelters are overwhelmed, opioids are still out of control and there are fewer people and agencies out there to help. I fear that we will spend the next generation trying to rebuild government and societal norms to the point that we will never get back to turning our weapons of conflict into plowshares. I am sad to say that poverty and homelessness will be a permanent part of the American landscape for decades to come. I feel bad that I am not helping anymore, but not too bad. I really think that I would have had an ulcer or heart failure worrying about the 100,000 desperate people in Cleveland or the milliions in the United States.
I worked with people who are not beaten down who think we can end homelessness in America, but after 40 years of continued growth it just seems like torture to keep hoping. There are not many idealists left, but there are a couple of overly optimistic people working in the trenches. I know social service providers in many cities who are waiting for the federal government to swoop in and save the day. We have to face the reality that the federal government will never ever be able to rebuild housing while serving the emergency needs of a segment of the population. There has to be a division of labor with every group drafted into the struggle and clear lines of responsibility.
I need to put down the information I learned. I need to put in writing all that I have learned from talking to thousands of homeless people over the years. I have written more about homelessness than any other person in Cleveland. I have asked more local people living in poverty their ideas for change than anyone else. I learned so much from people experiencing trauma that I better put it down in writing. Here are my thoughts on solving homelessness in America. Maybe in 40 years, we will be ready to end homelessness, and these steps can be a road map.
1. The President of the United States needs to declare that no one will sleep anywhere that is not fit for human habitation within two years. We are the richest country to ever exist and no one born in the United States should sleep outside or in a garage or on the beach or in a barn without heat or shelter from the storm.
2. Every city, county or parish in the United States must have a plan to meet the emergency needs of those living in that jurisdiction. They must have a plan to accommodate everyone who comes to the door for help, and there must be outreach to find people who are living rough. This will not include federal dollars, but they must welcome everyone to their doors. This does not involve law enforcement or arresting people for being poor, but does involve convincing people to come inside.
3. The facilities that accept people with a housing emergency must be warm, safe places that would be able to serve your grandmother. The measurement of the quality of an emergency housing facility is would the funders/staff/elected officials be willing to have their grandmother sleep at the facility.
4. Cities can charge suburban communities or rural counties for the cost of housing their residents if they migrate to another jurisdiction after losing their housing. Religious communities can assist with the housing and providing the emergency needs of the population as long as they are providing a minimum level of service using the "Grandmother standard." Every community has two years to get this level of service in place and functional. Those that cannot convince people to come inside are doing things wrong and will be punished for ignoring their citizens.
5. No one gets turned away in any community in America. If a person comes to the door asking for help, they will be provided a place inside. Those who need help should be able to get emergency housing by telephone or by visiting any of the help centers. If there is a crowding problem then the facility should provide free transportation to a safe that they would be willing to house their own grandmother.
6. There must be oversight of the system with independent review of the conditions to verify that no one is turned away. This should include people who visit the emergency housing facilities as "mystery shoppers" to assure local compliance with the grandmother test. Just opening the door is not good enough. The facilities must welcome those individuals in not like a jail welcomes people, but like they were providing hospitality to their grandmother.
7. These emergency housing facilities must have specialized care for mentally ill people, pregnant moms, addicted individuals and young people. These fragile populations should be diverted into more long term housing as quickly as possible.
8. After two years if a County or Parish is not in compliance with the Presidential Directive to not turn anyone away in the way that they would want their grandmother served then they lose all their HUD/HHS funding. These are not the direct to individual assistance such as Medicaid or Housing vouchers, but would be competitive grants that are withheld and those funds given to the local/state jurisdictions. Funds such as Continuum of Care, SAMSA grants, new projects and CDBG funds would be diverted from those jurisdictions to create more housing vouchers or more food assistance to the individuals living in those areas. The non-compliant jurisdictions would be punished while the lower income residents would actually receive more federal assistance.
9. The federal government will no longer fund emergency services and health related emergencies. The local and state government will need to figure out the best strategy to care for its citizens. Each community will need to come up with an emergency plan to move people out of these short term housing facilities into housing as soon as possible. People are valuable resources with amazing talents that are being ignored or wasted because of the scourge of homelessness.
10. No more tough love. It does not work and it is not what our citizens deserve. Everyone makes mistakes and should not be punished for life. Addiction is not a weakness that should be punished. It takes a lot to ask for help, and to turn a person away to live on the streets is inhumane. We need to end tough love and replace it with real love. If a person asks for help with their housing, they need to be respected by providing help.
11. There needs to be more science and less religion involved in the distribution of social services. For too many years, we have expected religious officials to carry the weight of protecting our most vulnerable. They have successfully kept people alive with food, but are woefully unable to quench the thirst for justice. They provide the superficial, but never get around to providing equality, fairness, and happiness.
12. The federal government will need to flood the market with housing including apartments, assisted living, dormitories, and single room occupancy housing in every market from rural communities to suburban areas of the United States. They need to make housing into infrastructure projects that create massive jobs in both rural and urban communities. Building 60 units of affordable housing a year in a community like Cleveland is pathetic. We need 5,000 units of housing and in large cities 80,000 units a year to serve the population.
13. The federal government will also need to demand a change in local zoning to eliminate the restrictions that prevent multifamily development or innovation in housing (tiny homes). They also need to require the community to build affordable housing as part of every development project. If you are building a new sewer, road, high end housing with any tax dollars, you must build housing for the lowest income residents or the disabled or the elderly. If we are going to turn this around, we need every level of government on board, and anyone benefiting from government assistance such as builders, contractors, architects, bankers to give something back to the community.
Cleveland has a leg up on the rest of the country, because County officials will say that they do have a policy of not turning people away. More to come on that myth in the future, but the United States can eliminate homelessness. We have the experience, skills, knowledge and I believe we have the will. With universal access to housing so many other problems are easier to handle including hunger, universal access to health care, improving education, job training, and out of control incarceration. Next step: funding this pipe dream...

I learned so much from people experiencing trauma that I better put it down in writing. Here are my thoughts on solving homelessness in America. Maybe in 40 years, we will be ready to end homelessness, and these steps can be a road map.
First Step:
The federal government is not the answer and will never come to rescue in the local community to solve homelessness. There are 450 jurisdictions receiving federal funding to address homelessness, and those dollars keep hundreds of thousands alive every year. A redirection or reduction in these fund will result in the loss of lives. There is no one solution that can serve a suburban, rural, urban and ex-urban community. No matter how much we talk about Permanent Supportive Housing or the Housing First model it is just a way to show some progress for the billions dumped on this problem in America. The federal government is key to creating thousands of units of housing, but they have to be free from focusing on the emergency and instead focusing on long term housing. For that to work, the states and local communities need to step up and take care of the emergency needs of their population. The federal government needs to be in charge of a massive infrastructure rebuilding of housing for all Americans.1. The President of the United States needs to declare that no one will sleep anywhere that is not fit for human habitation within two years. We are the richest country to ever exist and no one born in the United States should sleep outside or in a garage or on the beach or in a barn without heat or shelter from the storm.
