Well, That Was Strange

Mike Pence was announced today as the Vice Presidential candidate and Trump conducted one of the most bizarre speeches in the history of the United States.  He rambled for a half hour before talking about Pence.  He went through why pastors should be allowed to preach to those seeking government funded services.  That would stop once Muslim groups started recruiting Christians to convert in exchange for a bag of food or Jewish charities were only serving those members of their own religion with public funds.   He talked about how he had predicted Brexit even though he could not decide if it was good or bad.

The Washington Post indicated that Pence said, "You're Amazing" when the two shook hands after the quasi introduction.  They did not clarify if that was sarcastic.   What was up with the Rolling Stones music of "You Can't Always Get What you Want" before the start of the event?  Is that the perfect metaphor for the announcement?  What happened to the bold choice of someone outside the mainstream?  He could have selected a sports star, a winner of celebrity apprentice or Dan Quayle in order to surprise the crowd.

Donald Trump is an embarrassment to the Republican Party.  He is so self centered and everything is about how great he is at business, or how amazing he was in winning primaries, and then predicting the future.  He bragged about how he got more votes than any other Republican and how 80% of the media is horrible.  There was no mention of all the things that Pence disagrees with Trump or how much of an establishment candidate he is and always has been.

All this chaotic speech there was nothing to reach out to the non-white crowd.  Both the Ryan announcement in 2012 and the Palin introduction had some degree of pageantry and the name of the  VP's was visible.  If this is what the VP announcement looks like I can see a whole bunch of celebrities talking to empty chairs Eastwood style during the RNC.
